2015 Discussion Challenge - Why I Don't Read Certain Genres

@NicoleMHewitt @ShannonMiz #LetsDiscuss2015

Why I Don't Read Certain Genres

There are certain genres that I just can't get into. Steampunk, historical fiction, and fantasy are a few.

Steampunk loses me because the women in these type books are still bound by the Victorian standards of what a lady should be. Anyone who knows me knows that I hate the phrase 'act like a lady'. I'm convinced that the 'lady' standards were made by some man.

Historical fiction loses me because many times I feel like I'm reading something for high school. I am not a fan of the way people spoke in the 1800 and earlier. Stories like that drag for me.

Fantasy is to hit and miss for me. Fae, unicorns, and such do make for some good stories but some times the world building is just to dull for me to read through. I find myself getting bored quite easily in fantasy novels. The same is often true with science fiction.

Basically, if I can't get lost in the book because the setting is something that I can't gel with then chances are I won't like the book.

What to Join? Here’s All You Have to Do:

  • The 2015 Book Blog Discussion Challenge runs from January 1st until December 31st, 2015.

  • This challenge is to help get us discussing books and book blogging, so talk about whatever you want as long as it’s relevant to book blogging. Discussions can be book related or book blogging related (or generally blogging related – no discussions about things that are completely off-topic like travel or fashion, etc). Discussions can also be about you personally if it’s a get-to-know-you type post.
  • There will be a kick-off post on January 1, 2015 on both Feed Your Fiction Addiction and It Starts at Midnight where you’ll be able to leave your links for any January discussions. At the beginning of every month, a new post will go up  on both blogs for that month’s links.
  • If you forgot to leave your discussion link in the challenge month in which you posted the discussion or the linky list closed before you had a chance to leave it, you can leave it in a future month. (No duplicates though.)
  • There will also be monthly giveaways, so make sure you check in each month!
  • Use the hashtag #LetsDiscuss2015 to share your progress and connect with other participants on Twitter.

  1. I'm sort of the opposite. I often want to get away from reality. Although Sci-fi and historical can be a hit or miss. Love fantasy and paranormal though. I guess I feel I get enough reality and that I don't want to read someone else's drama. And other times, larger than life reality is just what I need. So it varies.

  2. Isn't it funny how some people really get into a certain genre and it can completely bore someone else? I always find that fascinating!

  3. I understand completely! The genres I stay away from are the same as yours, including romance. I find it all too exaggerated for me!

  4. I think it's normal to have certain genre preferences and others that turn you off. That said, some books are put at a disadvantage when pigeonholed by genre. I'm always wondering what great books I'm missing because "I don't read that."

  5. @Jay - it's not because I like books that are firmly based in realty. It is because most of the books I have tried (fantasy & scifi) the world building is a bore to read

@Nicole - I know right. I like reading reviews on other people blogs and some make think I'm missing out.

@Sabrina - I don't mind the exaggeration. Its the slow ass world building. Historical fiction on the other had is like a reading assignment.

@Lory - Me too. Once in awhile I'll try to give one a chance. I usually don't finish.

  6. Some genres I don't read are middle grade, straight up romance, and horror because 1) too immature, 2) *rolls eyes*, and 3) way too scary and I'm a wimp! Sometimes I'll dive into a somewhat scary book around October but that's it. The only MG books I'll read are any Rick Riordan book and any book set in Harry Potter.

  7. I always find it interesting to know why people don't read certain genres. I love fantasy and historical fiction, but I agree that the setting/world-building has to be well-drawn and well-paced in order for the story to still be interesting!
